Retail Trends

Blast from the Past

This 1957 video promoting the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo, CA, depicts what was once considered cutting-edge retail. Note the emphasis on parking. Can you imagine a promo today showing so much footage of the parking lot and so little of the actual shopping? And you can almost feel the LEED reviewers cringing at all that impervious pavement.

But some traditions survive. Spring promotions at that mall back in the day included an oversize Easter basket, while A.R.E.'s 2011 Design Trends Report pointed to supersized visual merchandising displays.

In celebration of their 25th anniversary, Disney Stores offers a visual journey of their store designs throughout history as well as some of the latest interactive stores here.

What other old retail trends survived or are being resurrected? Which retail trends from past eras aren't likely to see the light of day again? What can we learn from the past?
