How can it possibly take 16 hours to fly to Sao Paulo, Brazil, when I can get to Hong Kong, which seems much farther away, in 14 hours? I’m preparing to exhibit at Serigraphia in Brazil in July and it looks like my biggest challenge will be dealing with the elapsed flight time. I have a hard enough time managing the tedium of a one-hour commute to my office every morning, so 16 hours in the air may require extensive counseling. This trait has earned me the nickname “La Paciencia” (the patient one), facetiously assigned by my sons.

Those of us involved in green buildings for any length of time know intuitively that, when done correctly, green building save money and improve user satisfaction. I have requested energy bills from past projects we have completed and have generally been pleased with the results. Interviews with users are almost always positive and antidotes about no longer having allergy like symptoms or constant headaches since moving into the new facility are common. I am always thrilled then when good empirical studies come out showing real and tangible benefits to green building.

This year’s GlobalShop conference program certainly had people talking. The industry’s need for education has grown more significant, and the show has evolved its educational offerings to keep pace. To the delight of attendees, it would seem.

Sound a bit grandiose? Maybe, but if you attended this month’s NRF show and read last month’s Harvard Business Review article on the future of shopping, you may agree with me.
The HBR message was blunt and powerful: Retail executives must get past their technophobia quickly or they will die. If they don’t understand the power that new digital communications wield over their physical stores, those stores will rapidly become a gigantic albatross, a burdensome liability they can’t overcome.
