bulb shapes and sizes

A bulb, also called a lamp, is referred to by one or two letters, indicating the shape, followed by a number, indicating the diameter, in eights of an inch.  When you think of a “light bulb,” you probably think of the A19 bulb in the top row, second from left.  It is in the A family shape and it has a diameter of 19/8 inch, or 2 3/8”.  Another common bulb is the BR30, a Bulge Reflector, which is 30/8 = 3 ¾” in diameter.  Some people separate the shape and number with a dash or a space. EnvironmentalLights.com adopts the convention of using no dash or space.  What we call a PAR38, others may call a PAR-38 or PAR 38.

Watt Equivalents

The number of watts an incandescent lamp would consume to produce a like amount of light generated by a compact fluorescent or other lamp-type. Example: a 13 Watt compact fluorescent typically produces the light of a 60 watt incandescent, or 60 Watt-equivalents. That’s why compact fluorescents save about 75%-80% power to generate the same amount of light as incandescents, including halogens.

Energy-efficient

The quality of performing a useful task with a minimum of power consumed. Energy-efficient lights have the following characteristics 1) they have high useable light output per unit of power consumed (high luminous efficacy), and 2) their fixtures direct the light where it is needed. Energy efficiency can also be achieved through controls that make sure lights are off when not needed, such as occupancy sensors and timers.

Light Bulb Bases

If you want to get to first base in the bulb business, you have to get the base to fit into the socket. The Standard “Medium” base is an E26. Except, of course, when it’s an E27. This is what happens when different parts of the world with different standard bases trade with each other.
