What
is the purpose of A.R.E.’s committees?
A.R.E. committees and task forces are the backbone of the association.
The volunteer committee system provides a forum for determining
member needs and a structure for developing programs and services
to meet these needs. Committees are a vital part of our member-driven
organization.
“Standing”
A.R.E. committees exist only when there is a need for them.
Otherwise, task forces are appointed to serve until a specific
project is completed. Persistent lack of participation at
committee meetings or committee-sponsored programs implies
that there no longer is a need for the committee to exist.
Who
can volunteer for committees?
All A.R.E. members are eligible to volunteer to participate
on a committee. Members are encouraged to participate on one
of A.R.E.’s active committees to develop personal leadership
skills and contribute to the advancement of the industry.
A.R.E. members that volunteer to participate on a committee
are officially appointed by the A.R.E. President to serve for
the duration of his term.
What
is the time commitment for volunteering on a committee?
Committee meetings are held only as needed. Generally, conference
calls or polls of committee members are used instead of formal
meetings. Committee meetings are typically held in central,
easily accessible locations, and whenever possible, are held
in conjunction with other A.R.E. events.
How
long is a committee member’s term?
Volunteers are appointed to a committee for a two-year term
that generally coincides with the term of the A.R.E. President.
Who
pays committee member’s expenses?
Committees are responsible for accomplishing projects and
seminars on schedule and within the budget approved by the
A.R.E. Board of Directors. To avoid causing undue hardship
on committee volunteers, committees may budget for the cost
of reimbursing committee members attending committee meetings.
Why
should I participate?
Active committee members receive considerable payback on their
investment. Volunteering time and knowledge not only provides
personal satisfaction and recognition, but the collective
work of the committee furthers the industry and the membership,
and benefits your company. While
working closely with other fixture manufacturers throughout
the duration of a project, committee members form invaluable
peer networks, gain additional industry perspective, and develop
personal leadership and group interaction skills.
How
do I sign up?
A committee participation drive is typically initiated to
coincide with the term of a new A.R.E. president, and a committee
description list and volunteer participation form is distributed
by mail. However, interested volunteers don’t have to
wait for a new presidential term to get involved. Use the
committee sign-up form or
contact the A.R.E. office (are@retailenvironments.org,
954-893-7300). Committee participation is reserved for A.R.E.
