LEEDing the Way to Environmentally Friendly Retail

Is your company considering going green but unsure how to proceed? Are there baby steps you can take today or things you’re already doing that qualify for LEED? And what will the first wave of environmentally friendly retail look like? The Green Exchange in Chicago, scheduled to open in June 2008, will be the country’s first commercial real estate development designed for the advancement of green business; in order to be a tenant, a company must produce a product or offer a service to advance the green marketplace. Regency Centers Corp. owns over 218 shopping centers in 22 states and holds partial interests in another 187 retail centers across the U.S. Regency’s recently unveiled “Green Building Initiative” calls for $100 million worth of the company’s starts in 2008 and $200 million worth of starts in 2009 to be sustainable. Regency is one of the companies helping to develop a retail-center certification plan with the USGBC.The Green Exchange and Regency’s developments are attracting traditional retailers that are either seeking some level of LEED certification or creating new prototypes to meet the criteria of the development. Representatives from each developer, including retail tenants, will answer questions on potential models of sustainable retail and the USGBC’s retail-center certification plan.
