Building Inspiration in Greensburg

Moderator:
Bob Riley, CEO and President, DSA/Phototech
Speaker: Bob Dixson, Mayor of Greensburg
Sponsored by:
On the night of May 4, 2007, 95% of the homes and businesses in Greensburg, Kansas were destroyed by a massive EF5 tornado. You may have heard about this city in the news or on the Discovery Channel. Amidst the devastation, the city decided to rebuild. Instead of rebuilding the city the way it was, however, the Greensburg City Council resolved that all city building projects would be built to LEED Platinum level standards. Greensburg is the first city in the United States to commit to such a high calling, and corporate America and Hollywood are turning out to help. Nearly two years after the tornado, GlobalShop attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand about the progress the city has made and the lessons they have learned about sustainable design that can be applied to retail development. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to hear the Mayor of Greensburg as he shares the inspiring story of how the city is reinventing itself by putting the “green” into Greensburg.

Tickets are $75 if purchased by Feb. 23; $95 thereafter

Design and architectural firm, Little, will approach the discussion from the North American retailer perspective, exploring Godiva Chocolatier’s experiences. What type of considerations have these designers and retailers made when expanding their brands into other cultures and economies? What changes have they made in size, scale, product offering, signage, and store layout and design? We’ll take a look at international building trends. Exclusive roundtable luncheon with A.R.E.’s DREAM Team and Retail Council members. Topics for discussion:
Small Expansion, Big Splash
Hosted by: Brad Lenz, Vice President, Shop-in-Shop and International Stores, Liz Claiborne Inc.
Economic conditions have prompted cutbacks in expansion and redesign programs. How do you make the most of a more limited program? In which locales will new prototypes provide the greatest impact? How do you move the brand forward with a new design without making stores that aren’t being redesigned seem obsolete? What strategies are effective in planning for additional renovations as economic conditions–and budgets–improve?

Stretching the Imagination
Hosted by: Ignaz Gorischek, Vice President Stores, Visual, Planning and Design, The Neiman Marcus Group Inc.
Existing materials and products used in new ways can contribute to unique concepts, while emerging materials with special properties hold additional promise for innovative applications. What have you been dying to work with or try? Here’s your chance to compare notes, share ideas, and fuel your inspiration.

Staying on the Same Page
Hosted by: Tony Mancini, Senior Vice President, Capital Improvements, MGM MIRAGE Design Group
Miscommunication, lack of understanding of objectives, and disagreements can derail a project. What lessons have you learned from bad experiences on prior projects? What pet peeves would you like to avoid so that future projects can be successful?

Design for Disassembly
Hosted by: James Francois, Vice President/Director of Visual Marketing, JCPenney
This tenet holds that everything including fixtures, visual merchandising products, and entire interiors should be able to be taken apart after its useful life so that its parts can be reused and/or recycled. What is already being done in our industry? What further steps can we take now?
Contact Jo Rossman at 954-241-4821 to RSVP or to find out about becoming a DREAM Team member. Contact Karen Doodeman, 954-241-4833, for questions about becoming a Retail Council member.
