Bergmeyer Receives John M. Clancy Award

Pond View VillageJune 30, 2009—Bergmeyer Associates Inc. has won an Honor Award for Design Excellence as part of the John M. Clancy Award for Socially Responsible Housing. The award was presented by the Boston Society of Architects for Pond View Village, a mixed-use affordable housing community built on a 21-acre site that formerly housed the LePage glue factory.

Bergmeyer was hired by the Cape Ann Housing Opportunity Inc. (CAHO), a private non-profit development group, to prepare a masterplan to convert the abandoned factory site and buildings into a mixed-use affordable housing community. The site’s steeply sloping topography and seven-acre pond required the selective removal of some buildings and the exploration of feasible sites on which to introduce new construction. Bergmeyer's masterplan also anticipates new public outdoor spaces replacing existing parking lots and the creation of a central public space focused on the complex’s landmark chimney and foundation walls of long-ago demolished structures. Both the new and renovated buildings draw inspiration from New England mill buildings and Shaker residence halls.
