Giorgio Borruso Design Wins IIDA Interior Design Award

July 1, 2009—Fornari Headquarters Milan designed by Giorgio Borruso Design of Marina del Rey, Calif., has won International Interior Design Association’s prestigious 36th Annual 2009 Interior Design Award.

The IIDA Interior Design Awards annually recognizes outstanding interior design, encouraging new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishing of interior spaces. Six winning designs were chosen this year out of nearly 400 entries in the following categories: Commercial, Government, Educational/Institutional, Hospitality, Residential, and Retail.

Fornari Headquarters Milan is a 35,000-square-foot space, obtained by the conversion of the historic porcelain workshop of Richard Ginori, to be used for exhibition and events for the Fornari Group. A central spine penetrates this sequence of large open spaces, connecting the levels in a fluid and organic way and forming a pathway inside the expansive building. Through the illuminated corridor, thoughtfully controlled curves are carved into the wall, ceiling, and floors. Seamless stainless-steel pipes diverge and converge in three dimensions along the outlines of the curves. The effect gives the illusion that there is no gravitational force, that occupants can walk on any surface, and that the system can rotate 90 degrees and still work. The Fornari Headquarters is one of several award-winning projects Giorgio Borruso Design has produced for the Italian fashion company.

The winners were honored in Chicago at COOL 2009, IIDA’s Gala Black Tie celebration, held at the Grand Ballroom at the Westin Chicago River North on June 14, 2009. All winning projects are highlighted in a special section of the June 2009 issue of Interior Design.
