Architecture Billings Index climbs in October

After a sharp dip in September, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) climbed nearly three points in October. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported that the October ABI score was 49.4, following a score of 46.9 in September. This score reflects an overall decrease in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 57.3, up from a reading of 54.3 the previous month. “An increase in the billings index is always an encouraging sign,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “We’re seeing some regions and some construction sectors move into positive territory. But there continues to be a high level of volatility in the marketplace with architecture firms reporting a wide range of conditions from improving to uncertain to poor. It’s likely we will see a similar state of affairs in the coming months.”

CaGBC expands focus beyond LEED

As LEED and green building practices shift from margin to mainstream, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), which started out with the dawn of LEED in the early 2000s, is coming of age and claiming new ground. Four main factors are driving the organization to explore new directions between now and 2013: the mainstreaming of green, changes in LEED delivery and certification internationally, CaGBC’s growing influence and responsibility, and the evolution of the green marketplace. One of the most interesting new directions CaGBC has identified for itself, and one which we can expect will distinguish its path from that of the United States Green Building Council, is a shift from centering on LEED to the development of new programs and services.

Lawsuit against LEED/USGBC dismissed with prejudice

A lawsuit filed in October 2010 against the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its LEED rating systems has been dismissed in a strongly worded ruling issued August 16. Following a motion by USGBC to dismiss the case and a court hearing of oral arguments in July 2011 a judge in federal court in New York City ruled against Henry Gifford and the other plaintiffs, throwing out the case. The suit, brought by Gifford, a New York-based mechanical systems consultant, centers around his critique that USGBC falsely advertises that LEED guarantees energy savings in LEED-certified buildings. Rather than issuing an opinion on that critique, however, the court focused on flaws in Gifford’s logic in bringing the case.

A highly anticipated effort faces questions following a joint June 3, 2011, announcement from NSF International and Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI) that the two would pursue separate paths. The two groups had been working together to develop a single, robust, health-based ANSI standard for indoor VOC emissions.

AIA's Architectural Billings Index slows further in May

On the heels of a sizeable decrease in April, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) slowed even further in May. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the May ABI score was 47.2, a slight decrease from a reading of 47.6 the previous month. This score reflects a continued decrease in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). “Whatever positive momentum that there had been seen in late 2010 and earlier this year has disappeared,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “The broader economy looks to be entering another soft spot, and certainly state budget constraints are adversely affecting the profession’s ability to work on institutional projects. But there is no denying that the prolonged credit freeze from lenders for financing commercial projects is the number one challenge to a recovery for the design and construction industry.”

Manufacturers will need to assess the sustainable attributes of their building products anyway to meet market demand; the Freedonia Group recently projected demand for green building materials to expand 13.0 percent annually to $71.1 billion in 2015.

AIA Architectural Billings Index holds steady

The first quarter of 2011 has seen the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) remain virtually unchanged and right at, or slightly above, the break-even level. The March ABI score was 50.5, a negligible decrease from a reading of 50.6 the previous month, reflecting a modest increase in demand for design services. The new projects inquiry index was 58.7, up significantly from a mark of 56.4 in February. “Currently, architecture firms are essentially caught swimming upstream in a situation where demand is not falling back into the negative territory, but also not exhibiting the same pace of increases seen at the end of 2010,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “The range of conditions reported continues to span a very wide spectrum with some firms reporting an improving business environment and even ramping up staffing, while others continue to operate in survival mode. The catalyst for a more robust recovery is likely financing, with stronger growth occurring only when lending institutions begin approving credit for construction projects with much greater regularity.”

Architectural billings hold steady after two months of improving conditions

After showing positive momentum during the fourth quarter of 2010, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) slipped almost four points in January. This score reflects stable demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 56.5, down sharply from a mark of 61.6 in December. “This slowdown is indicative of what is likely to be a very gradual improvement in business conditions at architecture firms for the better part of this year,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “We’ve been taking a cautiously optimistic approach for the last several months and there is no reason at this point to change that outlook.  There are still too many firms that continue to see weak market conditions to expect a dramatic increase in the demand for services in the design and construction industry.”

Industry overall optimistic about 2011

Strong holiday sales at the end of 2010 could act as an accelerant for business in 2011, says the Association of Retail Environments (A.R.E.) in a Feb. 4 Wood & Wood Products report, “A.R.E. research indicates that sales of retail environments products increased by 9.5 percent and 2010 and we project an additional 10 percent increase in 2011,” says Klein Merriman, executive director. “At first glance, industry growth of close to 10 percent for two consecutive years sounds upbeat. But this is until you realize that the industry has declined so dramatically that it has a long way to go to get back to even.” According to Merriman, two-thirds of respondents to A.R.E.’s Industry Forecast survey back in September predicted “it will be 2012 or later before they are back to 2007 sales levels. So the outlook for 2011 is continued growth — even if at a pace slower than most would prefer.” Even a slow recovery is welcome news. And despite an increase in imported fixtures, displays and visual products from China the past few years, “pent-up demand for new and renovated stores should translate into sales gains going forward,” Merriman says.

AIA Consensus Construction Forecast: Stronger gains for commercial real estate sector in 2012

A slow recovery period is projected for the nonresidential construction industry this year, and 2011 spending levels are not anticipated to be enough to show growth over 2010 figures. While activity for institutional projects should hover near 2010 levels, there is likely to be a modest decline in commercial construction. Overall nonresidential construction spending is expected to decrease by two percent in 2011, with 2012 seeing an increase of five percent in inflation adjusted terms. “The key factors that have prevented an accelerated recovery include historically low lending rates for real estate projects, the lingering effects of general overbuilding and an unfavorable bond market that has hampered the ability for municipalities to get the requisite funding to build new schools and hospitals,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “Conditions should improve later this year and gain momentum as we move into 2012, particularly for hotel, retail and office building projects.”

AIA's Architectural Billing Index continues positive momentum

On the heels of its highest mark since 2007, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) jumped more than two points in December. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the December ABI score was 54.2, up from a reading of 52.0 the previous month. The new projects inquiry index was 62.6, up slightly from a mark of 61.4 in November. “This is more promising news that the design and construction industry is continuing to move toward a recovery,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. However, historically December is the most unpredictable month from a business standpoint, and therefore the most difficult month from which to interpret a trend. The coming quarter will give us a much better sense of the strength of the apparent upturn in design activity.”

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Economy gains positive momentum

Last week's economic indicators provided further evidence that the economy gained positive momentum heading into the new year. Last year was a time of recovery for manufacturing in America. After falling 17 percent during the recession, manufacturing production rose for six consecutive quarters through the fourth quarter of 2010. To date, the recovery has made up a little more than half (53 percent) of the production lost during the downturn and if the pace over the past year continues in 2011, overall manufacturing production should return to its prior peak in another year. However, it is important to note that the depth of the downturn and the subsequent recovery have varied across manufacturing.

NRF panel says retail ready to lead the recovery

NRF president and CEO Matt Shay opened Monday's sessions at the NRF 100th Annual Convention & EXPO with a message of optimism and hope, for an industry that is beginning to see the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. “Last year, the retail industry proved to be one of the bright spots in the economy,” he said. “All of you managed to find a way to get it done, despite a tight economy. The relatively strong finish to the year doesn't in any way diminish the serious economic challenges we all face.” Chief among those challenges, he noted the highest domestic unemployment since the Great Depression, and the possibility of increased inflation. “But nevertheless, I think all of us are willing to bet that the retail industry is ready to lead the recovery when it comes,” he said.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Manufacturing sector ends 2010 on somewhat positive note

For the manufacturing sector, 2010 ended on a somewhat positive note. After declining for four consecutive months, employment edged up 10,000 in December. For the year overall, factory employment rose by 136,000 to 11,670,000. While this was the largest gain since 1997, the 2010 increase represented just 6.2 percent of the 2.2 million manufacturing jobs lost during the recession. In addition, given the fact that 85 percent of the 2010 gain took place during the first five months of the year, the manufacturing recovery clearly lost momentum when the bulk of the fiscal stimulus measures were spent out. On the positive side, uncertainty regarding taxes on small businesses and individuals has been put on the back burner for several years. This week's report, along with recent weekly Monday Economic Reports, provides solid evidence that the economic recovery is starting to strengthen.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Consumer confidence edges down slightly

Due in part to a slack labor market, consumer confidence fell 3.3 percent last month after improving in October and November. Overall, consumer confidence was relatively steady in 2010. After falling 58 percent in 2008 and then rebounding in 2009, confidence edged down 2 percent in 2010. This is consistent with the fact that the unemployment rate, the one economic statistic most closely watched by the general public, was slightly higher in November (9.8 percent) compared to last January (9.7 percent). The recently passed tax legislation should accelerate the economic recovery in 2011 and improve the employment situation, which should generate a more robust upturn in consumer confidence this year.

AIA's Architectural Billing Index reaches highest point since 2007

After stepping back in October reversing into the negative territory, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) rose more than three points in November to reach its highest mark since December 2007. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. While this is heartening news, it would be premature to say the design and construction industry is out of the woods yet,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “We continue to hear a wide mix of business conditions, with a good deal of it still indicating flat or no demand for design services. Once we see several months in a row of increasing demand we can feel safe saying we have entered a recovery phase. Until then, we can expect continued volatility in business conditions.”

NAM's Monday Report: Solid export recovery remains intact

For the first time in many weeks, all four of the major economic indicators improved. While it was encouraging that the service sector, which has been lagging in the recovery, improved in the third quarter, the most encouraging news last week was the sharp improvement in the U.S. trade balance. After moderating from double-digit growth earlier in the year to a 2.5-percent pace in August, U.S. exports accelerated sharply to start off the fourth quarter and increased at an annual rate of 15.6 percent in the three months ending in October -- the fastest pace in five months. At the same time, imports slowed to just 3-percent growth in the three months ending in October. As a result, the trade deficit fell to $38.7 billion in October -- the lowest level since January. However, it is important to note that the manufacturing downturn was much deeper than the overall recession: while the overall economy will likely return to its pre-recession peak in the first half of 2011, the manufacturing recovery is only halfway complete and the current level of output remains about 9 percent below its level in the fourth quarter of 2007. This is why last Friday's encouraging report on export growth is so important. Without continued robust export growth, the manufacturing recovery will suffer. Thankfully, the combined effects of a competitive dollar value as well as solid growth abroad, particularly in South/Central America and Asia, are boosting U.S. exports, which is very good news for U.S. manufacturers.

NAM's Monday Report: Mixed signals in manufacturing sector

Last week's reports painted a decidedly mixed picture of the economy. While some positive momentum appears to be building on the housing front, consumer activity, while still growing, is losing some steam. There were mixed signals in the manufacturing sector as well. While the Dallas Fed's report of Texas manufacturing activity showed a noticeable improvement last month -- as did other Federal Reserve regional manufacturing reports for November -- the closely watched Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing report showed that the pace of the manufacturing recovery slowed a bit last month. This was complemented by the surprisingly sour November employment report released last Friday. While the economy added just 39,000 in November, down significantly from the 172,000 jobs created in October, manufacturing employment fell by 13,000 last month.

AIA's Architectural Billing Index reverts back into negative territory

Following the first positive reading since January 2008, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) dropped nearly two points in October. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the October ABI score was 48.7, down from a reading of 50.4 the previous month.  This score reflects a decrease in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 61.7, down slightly from a nearly three-year high mark of 62.3 in September. “This is disappointing news, but not altogether that surprising,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “We were anticipating a slow recovery period and it is likely that there will be some fits and starts before conditions show consistent improvement. Right now, reluctance from lending institutions to provide credit for construction projects and a sluggish economy are the main impediments to a revival of the design and construction industry.”

NAM's Monday Report: Rising orders for capital goods

A clear majority of the major indicators that came out last week (five of eight) improved, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. The Commerce Department's second estimate of third-quarter GDP growth showed that the economy grew a little faster in the three months ending in September (2.5 percent) compared to the initial estimate made the prior month (2 percent). Two of the three major reports on manufacturing were positive last month. For the three months ending in October, new orders for nondefense capital goods rose at an annual rate of 9.4 percent. Over the 12 months ending in October, orders were up by 15 percent. While the pace of orders is not as high as it was earlier in the year, it remains strong – showing that companies continue to have enough confidence in the recovery to expand investment plans, which is a positive sign going forward.

Manufacturing Technology consumption up, says AMTDA

September U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $399.76 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association and AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was up 66.1% from August and up 156.8% when compared with the total of $155.69 million reported for September 2009. With a year-to-date total of $2,090.27 million, 2010 is up 74.1% compared with 2009.

NAM's Monday Report: Broadbased but modest growth in manufacturing

Three of the reports that came out last week involved the manufacturing sector. Overall, the picture developing in the fourth quarter is of broad-based yet modest growth, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Of the major 19 manufacturing industries where production grew or declined, 14 manufacturing industries increased production in October -- the largest number since April. While this is a good sign, it is also clear that the manufacturing recovery is decelerating. Manufacturing production grew at an annual rate of just 3.3 percent in the three months ending in August. Despite the ongoing concerns with respect to possible tax increases next year, which would be a real "body blow" to the recovery, the chances that the manufacturing sector will continue to outpace the overall recovery are high, mainly due to continued solid export growth, which is the one area where the current recovery has performed better than all its predecessors in the post-WWII era.

NAM's Monday Report: Solid recovery in exports

Continuing a trend that started more than a month ago, last week's economic indicators showed positive momentum into the fourth quarter, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Three of the five major indicators improved, one remained unchanged (but continued to grow) and just one declined. While initial unemployment claims for the week ending November 6 fell to a seven-week low, they remain just 6 percent below initial claims to date this year and 24 percent above the 350,000 weekly claims consistent with a stable labor market. While the labor market may be improving, it is doing so slowly. The one area of the recovery that appears to be solid is exports. While not growing as fast as early in the year, last week's September report showed that export growth in the third quarter rose at a solid pace of close to 8 percent, while the global economy -- measured by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Composite Leading Indicators (CLI) -- continued above its long-term average. Both of these measures are a positive sign that this important source for economic growth continues to at least partially offset the sluggish pace in domestic demand.

Retail sales Increase in October. says NRF

With four straight months of sales gains under their belts and with the holiday season fast approaching, retailers have reason for optimism as consumer spending finally shows momentum. According to the National Retail Federation, October retail industry sales (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) increased 0.3 percent seasonally adjusted over September and 2.6 percent unadjusted over last year. “This continued momentum is good news for the industry, especially with Black Friday and Cyber Monday quickly approaching,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “While there is no question that consumer demand has improved, there are still questions about consumer confidence tied to high unemployment. We need to see improvement in key economic indicators to sustain any long-term growth.”

Process Displays becomes Process Retail Group

After doing business as Process Displays Inc. for over 80 years, officials of Process Displays announced that the company's name is changing to Process Retail Group Inc. The name change will coincide with the company’s move to a new headquarters in New Berlin, Wis., in December.
“Our new name better reflects what we have grown to be,” said Bob Zanotti, president of Process Retail Group. “In recent years we have evolved into a strategic provider of national retail marketing and merchandising programs that go way beyond the production of displays.”

Store Kraft recently completed a 2,000-plus unit kiosk roll-out in six weeks for Kohl’s Department Stores. The kiosks featured touch screens, credit card and bar code scanners, printers, speakers and other hardware and software features designed to enhance the customer experience and drive sales.

NAM's Monday Report: Manufacturing employment down, after increase in first five months

Last week brought more positive news on the economic front, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Seven of the 10 major indicators improved and just three declined. Overall, it is clear that the economy gained some positive momentum entering the fourth quarter, but another sub-par growth rate is likely. This is evidenced by last Friday's employment report, which showed that the economy created 151,000 private-sector jobs in October -- the most in six months, but the increase was not strong enough to bring down the unemployment rate, which remained stuck at 9.6 percent for a third consecutive month. Manufacturing employment fell by 7,000 in October and has increased by 135,000 this year. However, 99 percent of these gains took place in the first five months of the year. Since May, manufacturing employment has edged up just 1,000 -- a clear sign that the economic recovery has slowed.

NAM's Monday Report: Subdued growth

Last week brought positive news on the economic front, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. The headline report last week was the Commerce Department's advanced estimate of third-quarter GDP growth, which showed that the economy (GDP) grew at a subdued annual rate of 2 percent, similar to the 1.7-percent growth rate in the second quarter. Even after five consecutive quarters of growth, the economy has yet to return to its prior peak reached in the fourth quarter of 2007. While the overall report was not too encouraging, there were some bright spots.

AIA Billing Index positive for first time in over two years

For the first time since January 2008, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) indicated a growth in design activity in September, increasing for the fourth straight month. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the September ABI score was 50.4, up from a reading of 48.2 the previous month. This score reflects an increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was also up sharply, moving from 54.6 to 62.3 – the highest mark since July 2007.

Ruscio Studio receives two Canadian Shopping Center awards

Ruscio Studio Inc., based in Montreal, received two awards in the annual Canadian Shopping Centre Awards (ICSC) competition. Leggett & Platt posts third-quarter earnings

Leggett & Platt reported third quarter earnings per diluted share of $.31 (including a $.02 per share net LIFO expense). In the third quarter of 2009, earnings were $.34 per share (including a $.05 per share net LIFO benefit). Compared to third quarter 2009, third quarter 2010 earnings benefited from higher unit volumes and lower effective tax rates; these factors were more than offset by an increase in net LIFO expense (of $.07 per share) and higher-cost raw materials. In the Commercial Fixturing & Components segment, total sales increased $6 million, or 4%, primarily due to new programs with office furniture manufacturers. EBIT decreased $1 million; gains due to higher sales were more than offset by higher raw material costs and a less favorable sales mix.

NAM's Monday Report: Manufacturing production declines

After six consecutive monthly increases, industrial production fell by 0.2 percent in September -- the largest decrease since May 2009, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Making up 72 percent of overall industrial production, last month's decline was mainly caused by a 0.1-percent drop in manufacturing production. The September decline in manufacturing production came right after a sharp deceleration from 0.7-percent growth in July to 0.2-percent growth in August. This is a concerning sign that even though manufacturing continued to recover last quarter, it lost steam throughout the three months ending in September.

Southern Imperial acquires MagneCorp Inc.

Southern Imperial Inc., a Rockford, Ill.-based supplier of store fixture hardware and retail display solutions, acquired MagneCorp Inc. For over 30 years, MagneCorp has provided solutions in magnetic sign holders and ceiling banner systems, with its MagnaClamp™ and Sign-EEZ™ products. MagneCorp will continue to operate out of its manufacturing and warehousing facility in Minneapolis.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Global demand solid

Momentum improved slightly on economic front last week. Six of the eight major indicators grew, while just two declined, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. While the trade deficit widened in August, due to higher imports of consumer goods as well as a sharp deceleration in exports, the fundamentals still suggest that the trade picture should continue to be a bright spot for the economy in the second half of the year. Global demand remains solid and the global recovery should remain intact in the second half of the year.

Giorgio Borruso Design receives 2010 International Architecture Award

The Fornari Group Headquarters by Giorgio Borruso Design is a winner of the 2010 International Architecture Award presented by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Positive outlook for shopfittings and display industry, SDEA says

After two years of cutbacks in what has been the deepest recession in a generation, the Shop and Display Equipment Association says that sales are on the rise. In the latest survey of its membership, the association said that a resounding 72.2% registered an increase in sales over the last six months compared with the previous six months. In addition, 63.9% of respondents reported an increase in business, year on year. This represents a significant improvement from just six months ago when only 13.8% reported increased sales year on year. Looking ahead over the next six months this upward trend seems set to continue. 38.9% of those surveyed expect sales to increase; a further 55.6% anticipate maintaining similar sales levels. Favourable results were also forecast for the next 12 months with exactly 50% confident of increased sales and 44.4% expecting similar sales figures.

NAM's Monday Report: Manufacturing employment edged down

The slightly positive economic news continued last week. Five of the eight major indicators grew, while the pace of two indicators (California manufacturing and chain store sales) slowed, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. The most important report that came out last week was September's employment report, which showed that the economy shed 95,000 jobs last month -- the fourth consecutive month of job loss. Falling for a second consecutive month and for the first time since last December, manufacturing employment edged down by 6,000 in September. While manufacturers overall have added 136,000 jobs to payrolls so far this year, the fact that 99 percent of this increase took place during the first five months of the year shows that the economic recovery is cooling and not gaining steam.

OMNOVA Solutions reports third-quarter earnings

OMNOVA Solutions reported a net sales increase overall of 22%, compared to last year, with volume gains of 4% year-over-year. In the company's decorative products division, net sales were $82.6 million during the third quarter of 2010, an increase of $0.9 million, or 1.1%, compared to the third quarter of 2009. Sales improved in decorative laminates, coated fabrics and the Asian businesses, while commercial wallcovering declined.

D&P Custom Lights & Wiring Systems moves back to its new building

After D&P moved to a new facility earlier this year, extensive flooding in Tennessee in May forced the company to moved its offices elsewhere. The company is now back in its new facility, with upgraded equipment and enhanced design capabilities.

Small and midsize manufacturers to increase hiring

US-based small and midsize manufacturers are gaining confidence in the economic recovery, and many are planning to increase hiring, according to the Industry Market Barometer survey by ThomasNet, a search engine geared to the manufacturing industry." Of the 3,243 manufacturers surveyed, 45% "said their business grew in the first half of 2010, and 36% said their business stayed the same during that period. Only 19% said business declined.

NRF says holiday sales will rise 2.3%

Holiday sales are expected to rise a moderate 2.3% this year to $447.1 billion, according to NRF. While that growth remains lower than average, it would be an improvement from both last year’s marginal uptick and a dismal decline in 2008.

NAM's Monday Report: Negative news concerning manufacturing sector

Following a neutral report the prior week, last week’s economic news was slightly more positive, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Of the 11 major indicators, six improved, one slowed and four declined. Unfortunately, much of the positive news was not indicative of a strengthening private-sector recovery. Most of the negative news last week concerned the manufacturing sector and added to the mounting evidence that the economy is stuck in low gear.

AIA's Architectural Billing Index Shows Modest Improvement

Still not entering into the positive phase, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) increased for the third straight month in August. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the August ABI score was 48.2, up slightly from a reading of 47.9 the previous month. This score reflects a continued decline in demand for design services. The new projects inquiry index was also up, moving from 53.1 to 54.6. “Project cancellations, regardless of when they happen in the design phase, continue to be the main road block to recovery for the construction sector,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “Numerous projects have been put on hold indefinitely over the last several months with little hope that they will be resumed. Work that is being done is more likely smaller renovation projects, as opposed to new buildings.”

Looking at Business, Sept. 29

Economic signs are again a mixed bag, says Jack Robertson. The Federal Reserve reported that the nation’s industrial production rose 0.2% that month, but the Commerce Department said new durable goods orders fell 1.3%. The Survey of Leading Economic Indicators was up 0.3%, but the index of consumer confidence fell to 48.5 from 53.2 in July. The jobless rate was unchanged at 9.6%.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Neutral, with some worrying signs for manufacturing

Following a moderately positive report the prior week, last week’s economic news was neutral, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Much of the news last week surrounded the housing sector. After falling off significantly from April to July, August reports on housing starts, permits and home sales showed that conditions stabilized. A worrisome sign for manufacturers is that new durable goods orders fell 1.3 percent in August. Much of the decline was due to a huge drop in aircraft orders, which are extremely volatile from month to month, causing some to call the report encouraging. While it is true that most other industries reported increases in orders in August, a longer perspective shows that conditions are softening for manufacturers, not firming.

Fusion UV Systems and DVUV HOLDINGS, LLC, form strategic alliance

Fusion UV Systems Inc., based in Gaithersburg, Md., and DVUV HOLDINGS, LLC, based in Cleveland, suppliers in the ultraviolet (UV) curable coatings industry, announced an alliance to jointly market UV-curable powder coating systems for heat-sensitive substrates. The companies say that this creates a ‘complete system’ for combined UV-curable powder chemistries and process technologies. Both firms will market and promote UV-curable powder coating application systems using Fusion’s UV-curing lamp technology and DVUV HOLDINGS’s solvent-free UV-cured powder coating chemistry and application technology.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Manufacturing output continues to increase

Following moderately good news the prior week, last week’s economic reports again were modestly on the positive side, with five of the nine major indicators improving, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. At the same time, last week's reports do not signal that the economic recovery is gaining steam. Instead, the reports indicate that fears of a double-dip recession are not supported by the incoming data. While this is good news, the recovery remains in a soft patch, evidenced most clearly by last week's report on industrial production.

Leggett & Platt announced that it has sold its Storage Products business to SPG International, LLC. The sale completes the divestiture program, a significant part of the company's strategic realignment first introduced to investors in November 2007. Since implementation of the new strategy, Leggett has sold seven business units for a combined $433 million of after tax cash proceeds, exceeding the original $400 million goal. The divestiture program has reshaped Leggett & Platt by narrowing the company's primary focus to businesses with distinct competitive advantages, value-added engineering and manufacturing operations, and significant barriers to entry.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Manufacturing activity expands slowly, Fed says

Last week’s economic reports were slightly positive, with only one of the three major indicators declining, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. Weekly jobless claims moderated to the lowest level in eight weeks. The other good news last week was that the trade deficit narrowed significantly in July, after surging in June. Last week, the Federal Reserve released its Beige Book, which summarizes the Fed's appraisal of the economy from mid-July to August, showing that manufacturing activity expanded further on balance, although the pace of growth appeared to be slower than earlier in the year.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Modest positives while manufacturing slows

Last week’s economic reports were slightly positive, with six of the 10 major indicators improving. However, most of the positive reports were modest in nature, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. The economy continues to shuffle through the third quarter at a slow pace. The housing sector continues to worsen in the wake of the end of the homebuyer tax credit in April. Consumer purchases remain weak despite a slight upturn in confidence, and manufacturing activity is slowing.

A.R.E. member Bernhard Woodwork Ltd., based in Northbrook, Ill., was the top honoree for "Best Safety Achievement" in the large business category, says the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) and its insurance safety partner, CNA. Each of the four honorees achieved the lowest incident rates of reportable injuries with the highest number of work hours for the previous year in their business size category.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: After a slight improvement, a negative turn

After a slight improvement the prior week, last week’s economic reports again turned negative, with five of the seven major indicators worsening, says NAM’s chief economist David Huether. After falling 4.1 percent during the recession, a little more than two-thirds of the economic decline has been regained during the past year. Still, the economy remains 1.3 percent below the prior peak reached in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Retail sales up in July, says NRF, but outlook still murky

Weary shoppers returned to stores in July as retailers were aggressively promoting back-to-school sales. Retail industry sales for July (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) increased 3.1 percent unadjusted year-over-year and also declined 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted month-to-month, according to the National Retail Federation. “Household spending remains tepid amid concerns about economic stability,” said NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz. “Current data on the economy is mixed which signals that retailers will continue planning with caution until a long-term trend can be established.”

European manufacturing slows

Growth in Europe’s services and manufacturing industries weakened more than economists forecast in August, signaling the pace of the recovery has peaked. Economic growth is likely to slow from the fastest pace in four years in the second quarter as a slowdown in the U.S. and China dim export prospects and the impact of austerity measures by Europe’s most indebted nations may crimp consumer spending.

NAM's Monday Economic Report: Some improvements suspect

Last week’s economic reports were slightly more positive than negative, with five of the eight major indicators improving. However, some of the improvements were suspect. The July upturn in housing starts was countered by continued decreases in building permits and a further decline in builder sentiment in August. Meanwhile, the 1.1 percent gain in manufacturing production was chiefly driven by a 9.9 percent surge in motor vehicle output, as some companies decided not to shut down plant s for retooling operations, which is typical this time of the year. The biggest area of concern continues to be the employment situation, which appears to be weakening further.

Still showing weakness, Architectural Billings Index increases slightly

Following a two-month soft patch the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) rose almost two full points in July. The commercial construction category continues to outperform other sectors. “Business conditions at design firms remain quite volatile,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “While this recent uptick is encouraging, this state of the industry is likely to persist for a while as we continue to receive a mixed bag of feedback on the condition of the design market from improving to flat to being paralyzed by uncertainty.”

NRF releases Hot 100 Retailers list

Last year was tough slogging for merchants and shoppers alike, as the STORES Hot 100 Retailers report reflects. Nevertheless, some retailers managed to generate solid to strong results, particularly those with value propositions that appeal to consumer frugality. In addition, chains with novel or otherwise different concepts were able to attract those shoppers willing to spend. For other merchants, especially those in the apparel business, volume increases were made easier by comparisons with dismal prior-year figures.

AIA's Architectural Billing Index Falls

After three straight months of improving conditions, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) fell nearly three points. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. “This dip is somewhat of a surprise since it appeared that conditions were pointing towards a recovery,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “The overriding issue affecting the entire real estate sector is unusual caution on the part of lending institutions to provide credit for construction projects that apparently would be successful in this economic environment.”
